UPDATE: Wareham reopens some areas to shellfishing

May 15, 2013

The Wareham Harbormaster Department was notified by the Division of Marine Fisheries that it can reopen a number of areas to shellfishing that were affected by the sewer spill that took place on May 7, near the Onset Pier.

An undetermined amount of sewage spilled into the bay when an issue with the system caused an overflow that ran into a nearby storm drain.

Buttermilk Bay will reopen (except for the Miller Cove rainfall area), Butler's Cove, Fishermen's Cove, Bass Cove, and Widow's Cove will reopen as well.

Areas that remain under the existing closure will be closed for 21 days from the date of the spill that took place on May 7. The area is expected to reopen May 28, pending water quality tests.

Areas that will remain closed to shellfishing for 21 days from May 7, are part of Onset Bay including Sunset Cove, Shell Point Bay, Onset Bay, Wicket's Island, Onset Island, and Burgess Point on the Onset Bay Side.
