Mar 24, 2010

Four fire departments and approximately 30 firefighters battled a blaze at 394 Main Street in Wareham, across from CVS Pharmacy, just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24. One person was injured, but the nature of the injury was not known, though it was believed not to have been severe.

The fire started on the stove in one of the apartments in the house, said Achante Barrows, a resident at the property.

Four people lived in the building, according to a Wareham Fire Department press release. The two-story building had two apartments, said Wareham Fire Department Captain Mark Rogers. The fire caused an estimated $300,000 in damage, with all floors a total loss.

Wareham, Onset, Marion, and Carver fire departments were all on the scene. A State  incident rehabilitation truck, which provides firefighters with food, water and a place to rest while they are working at the scene arrived around 5 p.m. The fire was completely extinguished around 8:40 p.m., according to the press release, though a fire truck and Wareham firefighters were on the scene for about three additional hours, Rogers said.

A cat living in one of the apartments could not be saved.

The American Red Cross is assisting the families, Rogers said.

The incident closed Main Street between the intersection with Route 6 and the intersection with Park Street.
