Varsity hockey team defeats Southeastern Reg. Tech. HS, 4-3
Coming off a win against Cape Cod Regional Technical High School on Saturday, the Wareham High School varsity hockey team remained solid against Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School on Monday, January 22. The Vikings defeated the Hawks with a score of 4-3 in the final seconds of the game.
"The goalies were fantastic," said Assistant Coach Howie Ladd.
The Vikings took an early lead, scoring the first goal. Wareham goalie, freshman Marquise Almeida, stepped up, blocking most of the shots that came his way.
"Defense," Coach Ben Hathaway noted was sharp. He pointed out junior Tom Sullivan, sophomore Austin King, junior Robert Briggi, and junior Elaine McCarthy for their defensive work.
At the end of the first period, the score was 2-1, Vikings on top. The Hawks put up a fight, however. Hathaway admitted that his team got roughed up on the ice. Southeastern tied the game in the second period, 2-2, but it didn't last. Junior and center caption Sam Lamele got one in before the buzzer, making the score 3-2 at the end of the second.
Lamele would again break a tie in the third with just 19 seconds left to spare on the clock. With a final score of 4-3, the Vikings are now 6-6 this season, even with five key players out with injuries.
"Everyone has stepped up," Hathaway said. "I credit everyone on this bench."
The team next takes on Seekonk/Dighton-Rehoboth this Saturday, January 29, at 1:30 p.m. at Driscoll Rink in Fall River.
