A Wareham man was sent to a Boston hospital via medical helicopter Saturday morning after a fire started in his Sandwich Road home.

A person at the scene said the victim, identified as Joseph Phillips, may have tried to put the fire out himself. Wareham Fire Department Captain Matthew Rowley said Phillips suffered second- and third-degree burns.

The Wareham, Onset, and Marion fire departments responded to the fire, which was reported at 10:20 a.m., according to the Wareham Fire Department. Firefighters were on the scene for nearly six hours.

The fire "was difficult to put out based on the amount of personal belongings that the homewoner had inside the house," Rowley said.

A firefighter also suffered minor injuries from slipping and falling at the scene, Wareham EMS Director David Evans said.

The fire caused $150,000 in damage to the home, which was determined to be a total loss.

The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation by the Wareham Fire Department, Wareham Police, and the state Fire Marshal.
