Viking football team runs its way to first win
Wareham High’s football team got its first win of the season on a soggy Saturday night this past weekend.
Led by running back Josh Onujiogu (four touchdowns), the Vikings (1-3) beat Case (0-5) 50-39 on the road to secure their first victory.
Quarterback Stephen Toal also played well in the win for Wareham, scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter.
Wareham and Case went back and forth with scoring drives in the third and fourth quarters, but Wareham was eventually able to pull away and secure the victory.
Wareham scored four touchdowns in the fourth quarter. All of the team's scores came on runs, with heavy rain forcing the offense to keep things safe. Wareham didn’t pass the ball once in the game.
"The offensive line in general was pretty good,” said Coach Dan Nault. “They were outstanding in the second half.”
Nault said he was impressed with the team’s ball-handling skills in the wet conditions.
“We ran the ball every single time on offense, and we were still able to score 50 points,” he said. “It was a slippery field, and it was hard to handle the ball, but we did that very well.”
This Friday, the Vikings will face off against Fairhaven High in Wareham at 7 p.m. Nault thinks the team will match up well against the Blue Devils.
“Their quarterback (Cam Charette) is outstanding,” he said, but “it’s a spread offense that they play, and we can read a lot of the stuff that they do. We’ve seen this kind of stuff already.”
