Viking golf loss at Apponequet brings season record to 1-7
Wareham High School's golf team suffered a 135-77 loss to the Apponequet Lakers at The Bay Pointe Country Club on Thursday, bringing the Vikings' overall record to 1-7 as they hit the halfway mark of the season.
“It was a frustrating day, but that's how golf goes,” said senior captain, Jarrod Murphy. “Right now it's a tough year, we have a young team, but we look good for the future.”
Wareham's golf squad consists of two seniors, three freshmen, and three eighth graders. The high scorers for the day were both freshmen. Ethan Osley shot a 41 for 24 points, and Sean Holmes shot a 46 for 19 points.
The loss against the Lakers comes on the heels of the Viking's first win in four years. Wednesday the squad defeated Greater New Bedford Vocational by one stroke, 68-67.
“I just think it's great for the seniors that are on this team that haven't experienced a win,” said first-year coach Chris Perry, “It helps this program going in the right direction, especially for the freshmen and the eighth graders that we have on this team--knowing that working hard does pay off.”
Perry hopes to keep this young core throughout the next few years. He said he is aiming to recruit more seventh and eighth graders. Perry has had the squad practicing on driving ranges and using the practice holes, and said he has seen a huge improvement since day one.
“This is a life-long sport that you can play forever," Perry said. "I think that's the most important thing. I have a few kids on the team that have never touched clubs before. They've really worked hard, day in and day out.”
High school golf teams in the Eastern Regional Division are required to win fifty percent of their matches in order to qualify for the state tournament. With the Vikings' 1-7 record, but still eight games left in the season, there is still a chance for qualification.
The next tee off for Wareham is an away match against Case on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Touisset Country Club in Swansea.
