Viking Theater Company presents 'Pirates of Penzance'

Apr 22, 2012

The Viking Theater Company of Wareham High School will present their annual spring musical, "Pirates of Penzance" by W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 10, 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. in the Wareham High School auditorium.

Tickets are at the door and are $10 regular price, $8 for students and senior citizens. Children under 6 are free.

"Pirates" is comic or light opera from the Victorian era in England that satirizes the snobbery of the rich and the shallowness of supposed "respectability," as personified in the character of Major-General Stanley.

Newcomer to the stage Alex Monty will play the lead role of Frederic in his first major role. Alex Couto, recently crowned “Mr. Wareham," will play Major-General Stanley. Thomas Wright returns to the stage as the Sergeant of Police, and Alexandra Furtado will play Mabel.

Freshman Kim Barboza will bring her voice and comic expressions to the role of Ruth, a piratical maid-of-all-work. Diana Faulkner returns to the stage as Samuel, and the Pirate King will be played by senior Bobby Bergeron in his final Viking Theater Company performance.

Familiar musical tunes in the show include "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General", "Poor Wandering One", "When the Felon's Not Engaged in His Employment", and "On Cat-like Tread," which many audience members will recognize as the tune for "Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here."

Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance (or The Slave of Duty)" is directed by Don Bliss and choreographed by Kim Marsh. James Shetler is musical director.
