Vikings aim to keep building in 2015

With the first week of official practices underway, the Wareham High School football team looks to build on the momentum from the last game of the 2014 season, a 44-8 trouncing of Bourne on Thanksgiving.

Vikings Head Coach Dan Nault said that while his team is still young, as it has been in recent years, this year's team is all-around more experienced and stronger.

"I want to pick up where we left off, after Bourne," Nault said. "We're still young, but we've got a good, strong group. I like who we have coming back."

Nault said that with the size of the High School, and with enrollment dropping, it's unlikely to see Wareham teams of the past that had a senior starting at all 22 positions.

Nault said it's unlikely any freshmen will play on the varsity team this year, and that he is expecting a lot from a group of 12 to 15 seniors this season.

One of those seniors is Stephen Toal, who was the starting quarterback last year, and will likely be the starter this season, although Nault has yet to name his No. 1 quarterback.

Toal will be competing with Sophomore Isaac Nascimento, who led the Vikings to the win over Bourne last year, capping off the 2-9 season. Nault said, however, that Nascimento has talent at multiple offensive positions, so he might try to use him in positions other than quarterback.

Two other seniors Nault will be looking at to help anchor things on both sides of the ball are running backs Josh Onujiogu and Nick Elicier.

"They're mirror images of each other in a lot of ways," Nault said.

Nault said that throughout the summer the team has been attending summer camps and conditioning clinics to get ready for the season, and that there are a lot of players who are working hard to contribute to the team.

"The next two weeks are absolutely critical, as to who fills in certain roles," Nault said.

The first game of the Vikings 2015 football season will be at home against Fairhaven on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.
