VIkings basketball seek ninth conference title in a row this year
Last year, the Wareham High boys basketball team dramatically captured its eighth conference title in as many years on the last day of the regular season. With only two starters returning from the squad, head coach Kevin Brogioli is trying to craft a team that can win the South Coast Conference for the ninth year in a row.
Brogioli got an early look at the team during its first scrimmage Saturday afternoon against Taunton.
The two returning starters from last year are seniors Andy White and Matt Griggs. Mike Labonte, who played significant varsity minutes last year, will also be joining them.
"We've got a lot of interchangeable parts, a few shooters, just a lot of versatile guys," Brogioli said.
He said White looks to be one of the main scoring threat for the Vikings this year.
"We're going to need him to have a good year," Brogioli said.
Brogioli will also be looking for contributions from senior Derek Guerrir, who is one of the taller players on the team at 6'3", and sophomore Jovan Thomas, who played some varsity games as a freshman at the end of last season.
The boys kick off the season at home on Tuesday, Dec. 16 against Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech.
Brogioli said the team's goals are the same every year -- to qualify for the playoffs, win the league and go deep into the tournament.
He said Apponequet and ORR, who beat Wareham in summer league play, would be tough competition for the top spot in the conference.
"We hope to be in the mix and hope to get to number nine," he said.
