Vikings can't complete voyage to Brogioli's 300th win
Number 300 will have to wait until Friday at the very least.
The Wareham High School Viking boys basketball team lost a nail-biter in Bourne to the Canalmen Tuesday night 66-64, leaving Head Coach Kevin Brogioli just one win shy of 300 in his career.
Wareham led late in the fourth quarter after a strong driving hoop from senior guard Mike Labonte made it 62-59. But Bourne was able to cut the lead to one after two free throws by Bourne junior forward Tyler Rondeau. One of the two followed a missed attempt on which referees called a lane violation on Wareham, allowing Rondeau another free shot.
On the next possession, Viking senior guard and leading scorer Andy White was whistled on a controversial traveling call, which was followed up by an acrobatic up-and-under layup from Bourne sophomore guard Chris Davis. The basket gave Bourne the late lead 63-62.
Sophomore point guard Jacob Ashworth hit one of two free throws with under a minute to play giving Bourne a 64-62 lead, but White was able to collect a rebound and draw a foul off a missed three by Labonte with 24.5 seconds to go.
White hit both free throws, tying the score at 64, but a good point guard play by Ashworth on a drive and dish to 6’5” center Connor Schaefer with just 2.5 seconds remaining all but sealed the game for Bourne.
“We should win those games,” said Brogioli, referring to Wareham's squandered late lead.
He disagreed with the call on White, who didn’t appear to travel with the ball off a pass from the point.
“That was bad call on Andy White — it’s not the refs fault, it’s our fault — but we didn’t get any help,” he said.
Brogioli, who is in his 17th year coaching the Vikings, said he did have butterflies prior to the game, but they all but disappeared once it started.
“They always play us tough here,” said Brogioli of Bourne High (6-1, 4-1 in South Coast Conference).
The Vikings trailed 20-17 after the first quarter, but were able to establish control of the game in the second, taking a 39-28 lead into the half led by White’s 14 points.
But the Canalmen were able to bounce back in the third quarter inspired by sophomore guard Kyle Lemos, who had all nine of his points in the quarter, including a three pointer. Lemos sat out the first half for undisclosed reasons.
Bourne led 50-46 going into the fourth quarter, but the Vikings were able to recapture the lead until Bourne stormed back late.
“We put ourselves in a bad position in the third quarter. We had to stay a game behind ORR (7-1, 6-1 in SCC). Now we have to come back with a vengeance, but we don’t control our own destiny now,” said Brogioli, adding the team now has to hope for ORR to lose if they want to catch them in the South Coast Conference. Wareham has won nine consecutive conference titles.
White led Wareham (5-3, 3-2 in SCC) with 25 points. Senior guard Mathieu Griggs had 10 points, and sophomore forward Jovahn Thomas continued to fill the role of secondary scorer in Wareham’s offense with 14 points.
The team will get another chance to get their coach his 300th on Friday night when they play Case at home at 6:30.
Brogioli and father Jim, who led the Vikings to 404 wins in 25 seasons prior to Kevin’s tenure, will be honored at the game for their combined successes. The two are believed to be the only father-son duo in the state with 300-plus wins each (assuming Wareham wins another game at some point in the future).
