Vikings fall to Lakers 34-16
The Wareham football team traveled to Lakeville on Friday in hopes of finding a way to break out of their seven-game losing streak, but they did not find a willing host in the Apponequet Regional High School Lakers, who added to the Vikings woes by pounding them with another loss, 34-16.
The Lakers surged ahead 13-0 in the first quarter, but Wareham punched back in the second quarter on a seven-yard touchdown run by sophomore Charles Tranfaglia and a two-point conversion to climb to within five points at 13-8. But Apponequet scored again at the end of the second quarter to make the half-time score 21-8.
But Wareham came out of the break with energy and scored on another touchdown run by Tranfaglia and two-point conversion by Darien Fernandes to make the score 21-16. Wareham showed some spark with an interception by Ian Searles on Apponequet's next possession, but the offense failed to take advantage by fumbling back to the Lakers.
The Lakers followed with a touchdown run with 21 seconds left in the third quarter, and another with 5:38 remaining in the game to account for the final score.
Wareham will finish the season on Thanksgiving Day in Wareham against traditional rival Bourne at 10 a.m.
