Vikings heading to South Division final after defeating Rockland
The Wareham Vikings pulled out a win over Rockland at the Division 3 South semi-finals Monday night. The 61-56, knock-down drag-out basketball game looked like it could go either way up until the final seconds.
"I told these guys before the game, if it's a rock fight, we can win a rock fight," said coach Kevin Brogioli.
The crowd was going crazy on both sides of the gym the whole game, with Wareham and Rockland students wearing their school colors and cheering for their schools.
Going into the game, Brogioli said trying to put up a high score would be key, but it was a tight game throughout. The Vikings' defense was as ferocious as their offense, and the teams didn't get much more than five points apart from each other throughout the game.
The first quarter ended with Wareham leading Rockland by just two points with a score of 18-16.
Darien Fernandez sunk a three-pointer at the start of the second quarter. Sam Brogioli followed up not long after with another three-pointer.
Fernandez was the high scorer of the night, putting up 26 points for the Vikings.
By the half, the boys had brought the score to 28-23.
In the third quarter, Rockland tied it up at 30-30. The two teams went tit for tat for awhile with Wareham pulling ahead just to have Rockland tie it up again.
Wareham broke away toward the end of the quarter with Mason Vasconcellos and Darien Fernandez putting up two and three points respectively, to end the quarter with score of 41-36.
In the fourth, Rockland kept the Vikings on their toes, tying the game again at 43-43. Mason Vasconcellos broke the stalemate with a three-pointer .
Up until the very end it looked like it could be anyone's game. Sam Brogioli nailed a three-pointer with one-and-a-half minutes on the clock to bring the score to 57-53.
"I thought that was a gutsy performance," said Brogioli. "One of those performances where character comes through."
The Viking, have a record of 22-1 heading into the South finals against Martha's Vineyard on Saturday, March 9, at UMass Boston.
