Vikings to take on Bourne in annual Thanksgiving game

The Wareham Vikings may not have made it to the post-season this year, but they still have one big game left to play.

On Thursday, the Vikings will face Bourne in the annual Thanksgiving day game at Bourne. Kick-off is at 10:15 a.m.

It's been a rough season for a team used to staying in contention into the postseason, but head coach Dan Nault says the team has been learning and getting better.

Nault says the team is evenly matched with Bourne.

"Bourne is very similar to us. Their enrollment is [low] and they've had some of the same issues as us," says Nault, noting that Bourne has also been working with a very young team this year.

"Looking forward to Thanksgiving, I think it'll be a very competitive game."

Some of the things that have contributed to the Vikings having a less than stellar season this year may actually have made the kids better players in the long run, according to Nault.

Facing down teams such as Medway and Foxborough has taught the Vikings a lot and helped toughen the team up for next year, Nault explained.

"You get better when you play better people...the last five teams have been teams that are very very good. We're hoping we see some payoff from that," said Nault.

As the team has rebuilt over the season, Nault said he's optimistic that the team will continue to get better.

"We were just starting to evaluate them," said Nault.  "What should a sophomore be able to do at the end of the season? What these sophomores can do will be considerably better because they've been forced to."
