History was made at Wareham High School as junior Olivia Lacava became the first Viking to record 1,000 career assists for the volleyball team.

Lacava recorded the assist during a 3 to 0 win against Mashpee High School Friday, Oct. 11.

The milestone had never been reached before but head coach Allyson Collette knew it was only a matter of time until Lacava did it.

"The day I walked into the gym [Lacava] was a freshman and I knew she would be my setter day one," said Collette. "We've been waiting for this first day she touched a volleyball," said Collette.

Lacava said she "feels very accomplished" with recording her 1,000th career assist and she credits her teammates with helping her reach that goal.

"We all win together," said Lacava. "Because we all trust each other and we know whose ball is whose, we trust each other to get those balls and we all know what to do."

The trust and "win together" mindset Lacava mentioned has helped the Vikings find success this season totaling 13 wins over 15 games so far this season.

Coming into the season, Collette knew she had a strong team.

"Our whole group of starters was pretty much all returning so they have a lot of experience and they've played a lot together for the past two years," said Collette.

According to Collette, she knew Mashpee was going to be a tough opponent coming into the game and credited the win to the different improvements her team has made throughout the season.

"We've been working on serving hard and they served a lot better today than they have the last few games," said Collette. "We're also working on switching up our offense and spreading the ball a lot."

Collette explained the team has also been working on maintaining a positive energy throughout the game.

"Volleyball is such a game of mistakes that if they are able to move on from it and be excited we do really well," said Collette. "If we hold our heads down we don't do as well and we've done that the past couple games and today we were able to move on and get the next point."

The team is currently ranked 10th in the state and Collette is hoping to make a strong playoff run in the state tournament.

"We're really trying to go farther in the playoffs than we ever have before," said Collette. "We should get a home court first round game and we're hoping to at least make it one or two more rounds after that."

The Vikings take on Holbrook High School in Holbrook Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 5 p.m.
