A $3,000 donation from the Friends of the Wareham Veterans Council and some “sweat equity” from the Onset Bay Association’s Beautification Team ended with a restored veterans monument in the heart of Onset.

The Dudley Brown Memorial at Onset Avenue had brickwork redone and a new sign installed ahead of the monument’s 50th anniversary. Volunteers celebrated the recently completed work on Tuesday.

Kathy Judd, of the Onset Bay Association, said volunteers have been caring for the plantings around the monument and noticed it needed a facelift. They approached the Friends of the Wareham Veterans Council who were happy to provide $3,000 for the work done in part by Marbles Masonry, which repointed the bricks. Village Sign in Mattapoisett made a new sign for the monument.

Originally dedicated on Nov. 11, 1968, the monument honors those from the community who served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Bob Powalitis, of the Friends of the Wareham Veterans Council, credited volunteers for putting the time in to revamp the monument, referring to their hours worked as “sweat equity.”

“The reason we do this is to keep the memories of those who served alive,” he said. “We can never forget the sacrifices they have made.”
