Volunteers, donations sought for annual toy/clothing drive
When two Wareham organizations teamed up in 2015, more than 600 children in need received toys, clothes and other gifts during the holidays.
This year, the groups want to accomplish that same feat again, but they need help.
From Nov. 1 to Dec. 10, the Dick Melloni Youth Foundation and the Special Programs Division of Turning Point will accept donations of gifts at different locations throughout Wareham. The Dick Melloni Toy Drive has been a holiday tradition in town for the past 24 years. Turning Point offers services to the homeless or near homeless.
Lori Briggi, director of Special Programs at Turning Point, said when the groups joined forces last year the number of people served by the drive spiked from 200 to almost 650.
“They provided the toys and we provided pajamas, outfits, hats and gloves and gifts for older kids,” said Briggi. “After last year, we want to be better prepared and are recruiting volunteers…anyone who can give time, sponsor a family or help us organize the drive.”
While the Dick Melloni Youth Foundation will continue its fundraising and toy and clothing donation events, Turning Point is now responsible for distributing donated items for Christmas.
“The more hands we get, the lighter the work will be,” said Briggi.
Volunteers are needed to sort the donations and purchase items on the wish lists of families that qualify.
“We strive to give the same number of gifts to each member in a family,” said Briggi. “There’s definitely a lot of coordinating and handling of merchandise that comes in on the last day of the drive.”

Donations may be dropped of at 3 Viking Drive after Nov. 1 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the Church of the Nazarene, located at 6 Rogers Ave., Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Briggi said items that are in the highest demand are for teens and pre-teens. Those include: snow boots, socks, underwear, slippers, pajamas, sweatpants, personal hygiene products and gift cards (Target, Walmart, CVS, GameStop, Ryan’s Family Amusement, Flagship Cinema, T.J. Maxx and J.C. Penney).
The facility at 3 Viking Drive will not accept donations on Dec. 18.
