Volunteers refresh fences along Onset Beach

Jun 30, 2022

Beachgoers walking along South Boulevard might spot a few volunteers sprucing up the beachfront fences throughout the rest of this month.

The volunteers come from Road to Responsibility, a Marshfield-based organization that works with people with developmental disabilities, helping them hone their skills and find work in their community.

Judy Alves, from the organization’s location in Taunton, oversaw a group of people working to paint the long stretch of fencing white around midday on Thursday.

“After being cooped up ... it’s great just being outdoors,” Alves said of the work.

She said the work started at the beginning of the month, as her group prepared the fence for painting by sanding and scrapping off old paint. The painting will be done around the end of July, Alves said, with visits to Onset scheduled every day, weather-permitting.

This marks the second time Alves has brought groups of adults down to Onset to paint fences, as she first worked with the Onset Bay Association in pre-pandemic times to start the program.

Though the sun was pounding down on Thursday, being so close to the beach had its advantages: Alves said after work was done for the day, the group was heading for the water.

“We don’t have any beaches in Taunton,” Alves laughed.

Painter Tom Boland said when he finished painting, he planned on running straight into the bay. Fellow painter Jay Stone said he enjoyed spending time painting the fence.

“I have to earn it first,” Stone said of wading into the cool water after work.
