Volunteers sought to support Wareham veterans

Informational session set for Nov. 16

Seeking new ways to tackle old challenges faced by the Council of Wareham Veterans, a group has stepped forward to support those who have served the nation.

The newly formed Friends of the Wareham Veterans Council invites all to learn more about raising funds and assisting the Wareham Veterans Council's efforts at a meeting set for Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in Wareham Town Hall.

All funds raised by the Friends of Wareham Veterans, a nonprofit, will support projects by the Wareham Veterans Council, including the council’s effort to bring "The Moving Wall,” a replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., to Wareham.

Jean Sarnelli, president of the Friends of the Wareham Veterans Council, said bringing The Moving Wall to Wareham is not only important for those who fought in Vietnam.

“It’s going to be an educational experience for the youth in town,” said Sarnelli. “There’s a lot of young people who don’t have much knowledge of the Vietnam War.”

The Moving Wall is 250 feet long, half-size replica of the original memorial. Sarnelli visited the replica along with her husband, a Vietnam veteran, earlier this year. Bringing it to Wareham is important to the Council, she said.

“We were both deeply moved. We have friends whose names are on the wall,” said Sarnelli. “We’re planning to hold various ceremonies when it’s here in town from Aug. 17 to Aug. 22 to provide others an opportunity to pay their respects.”
