Walmart: Demonized by fear

Aug 24, 2011

I want to recollect what has transpired with Walmart over the course of time. We as a community have divisions over the proposed relocation of Walmart from East Wareham to Tobey Road in West Wareham.

With the economy in dire straits, we must take advantage of increased revenue and additional jobs, as well as people feeling good about themselves and putting food on the table.

We have individuals in town who are making allegations in order to promote fear and misinformation. I've heard their diatribe, the radical ideology of one who seeks to get attention, who feels we all should think like him, who thinks the demise of the universe will occur because of the cutting of trees. Isn't this how the settlers built their communities? Enough said.

My thoughts turn to the absurd theory of some of the East Wareham residents that the businesses in this area are in peril. This is utter nonsense. Of course the "know-it-alls" who think they are a home grown crop of "economists" know people will listen to their nonsense and uncertainty though fear.

Businesses in East Wareham will prosper because they have the ingredients of what people want: The ability to shop and eat at the fine establishments in this part of town. (And, may I add, some have been here for years.)

There is not a moat or fence built around this area nor will there be if this project comes to fruition. Enough said.

In regards to the traffic study, we are a mobile society because of our lifestyle. Traffic is in our day. Mass hysteria has raised its head instead of learning the solution. We have our own so-called "know-it-alls" in this field. There is some infrastructure in place. Let common sense prevail.

Remember all the panic when the shopping plaza was proposed? From the fear of air pollution from all the traffic? We had some residents selling their homes. I'm wondering if they have left or if they are doing their shopping at the place they were against.

Lastly, I do not write this to insult anyone's intelligence, however, I am incensed by lies.

I don't feel this town will shoot itself in the foot with the economy what it is. The powers at be will decide intelligently. Put this in the hands of professionals.

Thank you for your time.
