Walmart move will not greatly impact shopping, tourism

May 24, 2011

To the Editor:

I have just returned from the Planning Board meeting of May 16 and I would like to critique what went on.

First of all, have the environmentalists in this community been to any other projects in town to address the cutting of trees and disturbing the environment like they say Walmart is intending to do? (Maybe visit the A.D. Makepeace Rosebrook project. I have heard rants about what's been done there.)

Secondly, some in this community seem to have a bad attitude about Walmart and the way they do things. They don't want Walmart to relocate across town because of the fear that East Wareham and its people will disappear off the face of this Earth because Walmart wants to expand.

You don't like Walmart and portray them as bad for business. You're afraid about Walmart making the move to offer consumers more to choose from, creating more jobs and revenue for this community.

We are a small town. This is not a big metropolis. The business end of things have moved to the western part of our little town, which has more accessible highways.

This is also a tourist area. Will the tourists not come here because Walmart decides to relocate four miles up the road? Will water cease to exist?

Let's go back a few years when Route 25 was extended to the Bourne Bridge. How many businesses went belly-up?

Question: How long will it take to travel to shop in West Wareham?

As long as it took the people in West Wareham to travel to East Wareham to shop.

The beat goes on. Until next time!
