Wareham’s ‘Maxim Guy’ to discuss former fire apparatus manufacturer

The Wareham Historical Society will host Howie Smith, a former Wareham resident known as the “Maxim Guy,” on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Methodist Meeting House, located at 495 Main St.

The public is invited to attend and learn about the Maxim Motor Company, a fire apparatus manufacturer based in Middleboro from 1914 to 1989.

Smith, a Cambridge firefighter, writer, and historian is well-known as the “Maxim Guy” for his knowledge of the company. A presentation will detail how Smith started collecting Maxim information. He will share photos of Wareham and Onset apparatus built by Maxim and talk about a recent partnership that resulted in the preservation of all the Maxim builders records.

Smith is also a member of the Antique Truck Historical Society, The Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America and is past president and current board of director for the Massachusetts Antique Fire Apparatus Association.

Refreshments will be served after the program. There is no cost for Historical Society members, admission for nonmembers is $2.
