Wareham Board of Health fines Dollar Tree $100

The Board of Health fined discount retailer Dollar Tree $100 for not complying with the town’s sanitary code after three inspections.

On Wednesday, Daniel Emmett, who appeared at the board’s meeting representing Dollar Tree, said he was unaware of the store’s condition, which included filthy floors and trash left beneath shelving. The store is located at 2991 Cranberry Highway.

Health Inspector Patrick MacDonald reported the conditions to board members after warning Dollar Tree management. Health Agent Bob Ethier said MacDonald told store management to clean up twice following inspections.

“Patrick gave enough warning saying it should be cleaned and nothing was done,” said Ethier. “Just because they sell things at a discount doesn’t mean it shouldn’t look like any other store we have in town.”

Emmett said he received the message, explaining that a new store manager was having trouble adjusting to the position.

“I know there is an issue now,” said Emmett. “I won’t tolerate another issue.”

Chair Amy Wiegandt suggested Emmett contact Dollar Tree’s corporate staff to schedule a professional carpet cleaning of the store on a regular basis, ideally four times a year. Wiegandt said the board would draft a letter to Dollar Tree corporate with that recommendation.

“Hopefully, going forward things will be better,” said board member Catherine Phinney.
