Wareham Boys and Girls Club advisory board created
A new advisory board for the Boys and Girls Club of Wareham has formed, tasked with providing programming input and fundraising support for the organization.
The group will be chaired by Miguel Gomes Jr., senior vice president for administration and finance at Bridgewater State University.
“This diverse group will provide programming input and fundraising support for the Wareham club,” said Gomes, a Wareham native. “We will continue to operate under the New Bedford umbrella, but this group will give us leadership at the local level.”
The Boys and Girls Club of Wareham, located in the former Hammond School in Onset, has 164 members ranging in age from 6 to 15. Many are from economically disadvantaged or single-parent families, or face other challenges, said Ken Fontes, Wareham unit director. The club has been affiliated with the New Bedford board since 2007.
The advisory board’s first official effort is to promote attendance at the Club’s annual fundraiser, the “Kukoo Gala.” The event, featuring a silent and live auction, will be held Friday, June 17, at the Rosebrook Event Center in Wareham. Now in its sixth year, the Kukoo Gala has historically been held at the Kittansett Club in Marion.
Bob Brady, owner of UpperCapeK9s and a member of the town’s Community and Economic Development Authority, will serve as vice chair of the new board. Treasurer is Emmanuel Daskalakis, an architect and importer who recently relocated to his family’s Wareham summer home full time. Linda Burke, vice president for marketing at the A.D. Makepeace Company and a member of the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce and Plymouth County Development Council Boards of Directors, will serve as board secretary.
