Wareham businesses that sold alcohol to minors face 2-day license suspensions

Selectmen punished the owners of two Wareham businesses for selling alcohol to minors this August on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Both the Bay Pointe Club and the Americana Cafe will have liquor licenses suspended on Oct. 2 and 3. The businesses will also be required to post a sign explaining the reason for the suspension.

“As this is the first offense for both businesses, we’ll stick to our standard of a two day suspension,” said Selectman Alan Slavin.

Wareham Police conducted identification compliance checks on more than 40 restaurants, bars and clubs in town this summer. The Bay Pointe Club and the Americana Cafe were two of three establishments to fail these checks by serving alcohol to two underage agents. The third was the Stonebridge Bistro in Onset.

“I applaud the police force for their diligence,” said Bay Pointe Club owner Timothy Fay. “And I accept full responsibility for what happened.”

According to Fay, the waitress who served the two agents at the country club was recently hired and still on probation at the time of the incident. The business has held regular staff meetings since then to enforce the carding of younger patrons.

“This has been extremely upsetting for ownership and management,” Fay said. “It won’t happen again.”

Americana Cafe Owner Karen Moore, who had served the two underage agents herself, also said she took full responsibility for the incident.

“I’ve checked every single ID since that day,” Moore said. “I’m deeply sorry.”
