Wareham chiropractor is one of state's few DOT examiners
Walk into Costa Chiropractic on Main Street, and Dr. David Costa will be doing one of two things. The first is obvious: He’ll be fixing folks’ backs. The second is less obvious: He’ll be administering the Department of Transportation’s medical examination.
“They blend in together. I’ll go to one room where I finished aligning somebody’s spine, and doing some stretching and working on their back and neck… and I’ll walk into the next room where I’ll administer an exam for a truck driver,” said Costa. “It’s a nice little break.”
“I love chiropractic, and I could do it all day, but I like doing these exams, and it brings in a mix of patients,” said Costa.
A chiropractor also administering exams to folks who may sit in a chair seat for hours on end makes sense.
“We’ve had lots of truck drivers and construction workers who come in for their DOT exam, and then they’ll come back to us for chiropractic care,” said Costa.
For those looking to drive a truck of bus, the department now requires they pass a medical examination from a certified medical examiner. The exam is essentially a combination of a physical, hearing and eye exam.
Costa is one of a few doctors across the state who is part of this National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners, and the only between New Bedford and West Yarmouth.
Costa says there is a large population of bus and truck drivers in Wareham and the surrounding areas.
“A lot of companies have been sending their drivers to Boston or something to get these exams done, whereas we have someone here, locally, that can do it,” said Costa. “There is a big population that needs this done.”
This examination applies to more people than just truck and bus drivers, though.
“We had one guy that had to have it done. He was a race car driver, and he was required to get the exam done,” said Costa. “There was a professional comedian on a cruise ship, and the cruise ship company required her to get the exam done.”
