Wareham company's heating system featured in museums, model homes
A West Wareham company has shipped its energy-efficient heating system to 37 countries, and 22 museums around the world depend on it to keep artwork in perfect condition.
This weekend, CaloriQue will show off its work at the local level, at South Shore Living's Idea Home in Carver.
CaloriQue manufactures energy-efficient radiant heating systems. Because radiant heat runs through floor or ceiling tiles, it warms the actual building rather than the air, making CaloriQue's system popular among museums because the air isn't filled with dry heat that might affect exhibits.
Rather than using a boiler to heat water and run it through the floor like a hydronic radiant heating system, the CaloriQue system heats floors and ceiling tiles with electricity produced from solar power, explained Michael King of CaloriQue.
“We’re able to help people be more comfortable in their homes and save money on their energy bill at the same time,” King said.
That's made the system popular in countries that enforce standards for energy-efficiency in homes.
“You could be outside on a really cold day, but if you stand in front of the sun, you feel the warmth of radiant energy," said King "In some ways our product is like installing the sun in your house.”
CaloriQue's system drew the attention of designers of the 2012 South Shore Living Idea Home, a show home that features the latest trends in construction and design. Built in conjunction with the Davenport Building Company, the home also displays the talents of a number of other local companies.
Davenport "wanted to build sort of this ideal home and incorporate all the latest and greatest and best technology,” King said.
The home is located at 11 Red Tail Lane in Carver. The “grand reveal” is scheduled for October 13 and 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
