Wareham defeats Old Rochester 63-51

Dec 24, 2010

The Wareham boys basketball team played two strong quarters of basketball against Old Rochester, but that was enough to get them their second win of the season and  remain undefeated.

Wareham started fast and held a 14-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Scoring was difficult for both teams, but Wareham used their offensive rebounding and foul shooting to move ahead.  And their strong defense made if difficult for the ORR Bulldogs to get good looks or good shots.

The Viking's strong play continued into the second quarter, and their lead ballooned to 17 points (23-6) at the 5:15 mark on free throws by Junior Tyler Gomes.  But the Bulldogs came back on strong play by 6'6" Junior center Max Risch, better overall defense, and erratic play Wareham.  Wareham's 17-point lead evaporated to one point, as ORR put together a 19-3 run to trail at halftime by the score 26-25.

The Bulldogs continued their strong play in the third quarter, showing more patience and better shot selection than the Vikings.  ORR quickly took the lead at 7:07 on a basket by Risch, and pushed the lead to four at the 1:58 mark in the quarter, 38-34.  But the Vikings would not let them extend that lead, ending the quarter trailing by one, 41-40.

In the fourth quarter, the Vikings found their game again, in particular their offense.  They began attacking the Bulldog's in the open floor and in their zone, and this produced layups, open three-pointers, and several trips to the foul line for free throws.  The Vikings reversed their 2nd and 3rd quarter scoring problems, built an eight-point lead at the 3:14 mark, and then made their free throws to produce their final twelve-point victory margin.

Senior guard Sheldon Freye played a strong game, both as the point guard the game's leading scorer with 16 points.  Sophomore Jeff Houde had 10, Dwight Senna had 9, and Aaron Baptiste had 8.  Junior guard Matt Teefy led the the Bulldogs with 11 points, followed by Max Risch with 10.

The boys varsity team will play next in Bourne on Tuesday, December 28 at 6:30 PM.
