Jan 23, 2019

The Wareham Department of Natural Resources is collecting gift cards from now until Feb. 1 to help members of the United States Coast Guard who are affected by the partial government shutdown.

Now in its fifth week, the shutdown has affected some 800,000 government employees according to published reports. Friday, Jan. 25, will mark the second week that these workers have gone without a paycheck.

“The men and women of the United States Coast Guard are always there to help others no matter where or when and in any conditions,” Wareham Department of Natural Resource officers said in a Facebook post. “It is our turn to help them and their families who have no income during the partial government shutdown.”

Gift cards of $20 or less can be donated at the Department’s Administrative Office Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cards can also be mailed to Wareham DNR 54 Marion Road, Wareham, MA 02571.

Gift cards for gas, Stop & Shop, Target, Walmart, CVS Pharmacy, Market Basket and ALDI USA are recommended by Coast Guard support representatives. Amounts must be $20 or less.

All collected gift cards will directly benefit the United States Coast Guard Station on the Cape Cod Canal.

No other donations are being asked for at this time.
