Wareham fiddles
Fiddlers came from near and far to compete in the July 3 fiddlers competition at Roland Thatcher Hall, and those in attendance were treated to rousing renditions of American bluegrass, to Scottish reel, to Irish jigs. Contestants came from as far away as Augusta, GA and and as near as Wareham, Rochester, West Yarmouth, and Stowe, MA.
Participants competed in open and junior classes. The open competition was won by Erin Hatfield from Augusta, GA playing a bluegrass favorite, "Orange Blossom Special" and "Devil's Dream". Erin and her family are regular summer vacationers in Mattapoisett.
"I saw the story of the contest last year and thought, 'hey, I'd like to do that,'" she said after winning.
Tiffany Rozenas of Rochester placed second, and wowed the crowd with a rendition of "Maggie's Pancakes" for her final piece.
Joe Bergeron of Falmouth placed first in the junior competition. Erin Carr of Falmouth placed second.
Diane Maranchie of Falmouth, who placed third in the Open Class, said that it was a great event.
"It was real wholesome, old-fashioned fun for all generations" she said. "It encompassed every age and everyone can respect each other."
Event coordinator Carolyn McMorrow agreed.
"This is the second year we had it and it was a great turnout," she said. "We needed something to liven up the lunch room, what better than fiddlers?"
