Wareham Fire District voters approve funds for department upgrades
The Wareham Fire District will receive a host of upgrades to its equipment after voters approved funding at the Wareham Fire District annual and special meetings Monday.
More than $585,000 was approved to be taken out in the form of a loan to replace a rundown fire engine the district has been using since 1988.
Prudential Committee members said they weren’t sure of the specific details of the loan agreement, since it hasn’t been established yet. They added it will likely be a five-year loan, similar to the last time a loan was taken out for a new engine.
The replacement was originally scheduled to happen next year, but given the truck’s current condition the Prudential Committee found it would be better to replace it sooner. The new engine is expected to hold up for 25 years.
Voters also approved funding to standardize “call force” equipment. In addition to emergency response, the call force provides a variety other nonemergency services. The equipment will include such items as: cordless rescue batteries, lockout kits, a chain saw, and flat head axes.
A number of spelling corrections to the Wareham Fire District’s bylaws were passed Monday. In jest, voter Howard Smith also suggested correcting the spelling of "Wareham" on the front page of the meeting warrant given to residents.
