Wareham firefighter makes cameo at wrestling event
Wrestlers from Top Rope Promotions were in Wareham Saturday evening, and a familiar face got to get into the action.
The group, as well the over 100 fans who came to see them, were at Wareham Middle School Saturday night to benefit the two traveling girls basketball teams associated with the Wareham Junior Basketball Association. Performers involved with Top Rope mix athletic ability with acting to put on a show similar to the professional wrestling seen on television.
Several bouts took place, and there was a surprise performance by Wareham Firefighter Chip DeBlois, who came to the aid of fellow firefighter/wrestler Chris Costa of Top Rope Promotions and the Somerset Fire Department, who had been "attacked" after his victorious match against by opposing wrestler Vega.
"It was the perfect situation. It was like life imitating art," said Costa. "He was helping another brother out, just like we do with on the job."
"My dad was the guy who clotheslined the other guy," said proud son Gabriel DeBlois, 9.
DeBlois, a towering figure standing well over six foot tall, was a perfect fit for the wrestling role. He said he was approached by organizers prior to the match about appearing.
"Being a wrestling fan, I said 'sure!'" said DeBlois. "The adrenaline was rolling."
"His dad is a hero," added Gabriel's friend Jack Leconte, 8.
Members of the two girls basketball teams, which consist of grade six and seven students, volunteered at the show, but were able to enjoy the entertainment as well.
"Just seeing them, it was a lot of fun," said Avarey Leconte, 12. "They were really funny."
"The whole thing was fun," added Kiaralyz Suarez, 12. "We got to take selfies with them, too."
Proceeds from the event will go to the two teams, and coach and organizer Joe Hathaway said he considered the event to have been a success.
"It's all for the girls," said Hathaway. "I think we made enough to pay for the (traveling) league."
