Wareham High School Hall of Fame inducts all stars

Nov 27, 2016

A state championship basketball team, former Red Sox player and football coach with ties to UMass Amherst and Syracuse University were among those inducted into the Wareham High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Held in the Rosebrook Convention Center, the ceremony marked the fourth consecutive year former athletes were honored.

The event was revived in 2013 after a 24-year hiatus. Since then, it's continued to grow.

“This is the best year we’ve had yet for ticket sales,” said Mary Jane Driscoll, who helped organize the ceremony.

In total, 140 people attended to celebrate the seven individuals and one team in this year’s induction class.

Ed Rose

A 1973 graduate who played football, basketball and baseball, Rose travelled from Florida where he coaches young players hoping to go onto college and eventually the majors.

Rose was a high school baseball star and later played for the Red Sox before he started the B.E.S.T. Baseball Academy in Jamaica. The school teaches the sport to young Jamaicans.

Rose said he was humbled to be in this year’s Hall of Fame class.

Reflecting on growing up in Onset, Rose said the community came together in helping to provide a place for him and his teammates to play in what is now Lopes Field.

“They say it takes a village to raise a kid, well, I’m one of those kids,” he said.

During his speech, Rose thanked his parents for making him the person he is today.

“Without their love and discipline this moment would have been a lot more difficult to achieve,” said Rose.

Samantha Sandland

A 2005 graduate of Wareham High School, Sandland was honored for being an outstanding soccer player.

During her freshman year, Sandland was part of the team that was ranked second in the state. That was the same year she became the leading scorer in the South Coast Conference.

In addition to soccer, she was on the track and basketball teams.

“It’s such an honor to be here,” said Sandland. “It’s definitely been a reflective experience being the only woman inducted this year -- I’m proud of that.”

Coach Bill Maxwell

Maxwell who passed away in 1998, was also inducted. His distinguished coaching career included stints at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Syracuse University where he coached football.

From 1962 to 1971, Maxwell coached the Wareham High School football team. He returned to the UMass where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees. From 1971 to 1977, Maxwell coached running backs, quarterbacks and then became offensive coordinator.

In 1981, he went to Syracuse University where for 10 years he coached a variety of positions.

From 1991 to 1994, he was the head coach at Hobart and William Smith College where he led the team to a 7-3 season in 1993, its best record in more than 10 years at the time.

Maxwell’s son, Dan, accepted the award on behalf of his father.

The rest of the hall of famers are:

  • Clyde Monteiro (1957), football, basketball and baseball
  • Miguel Gomes (1966), football and basketball
  • Nick Fernandes (1981), basketball and football
  • Chris Mendes (1984), basketball and football

This year’s inducted team was a distinguished one. In 1956, it won the Tech Tournament, which served as the Massachusetts State Championship at the time.

That year, the team defeated Oliver Ames 65-53 in the original Boston Garden after capturing the Old Colony league title and the South Shore Championship.
