The artistic talent of Wareham High School students was on full display Thursday night.

That evening, the school held its ninth annual Fine Arts Night where paintings, drawings, sculptures, woodwork, culinary creations, dramatic performances and more were featured.

In the high school lobby, senior portfolios greeted visitors, including the playfully fanciful work of Addison Staley.

“I’m inspired by pop artists that work with surreal elements,” said Staley. “I like the whimsical.”

Her bright drawings featured anthropomorphic paintbrushes and paint cans playing alongside cartoon children. The whimsy didn’t end in two dimensions, however. For the show, Staley submitted a dodo sculpture that served as the base for a lamp.

Staley, who is an advanced placement art student, said she plans on pursuing art and design as a career after graduating.

One of the show’s organizers, art teacher Amy Dion, said the seniors spend a lot of time preparing for the show, which includes curating what pieces they want to highlight.

“This is really a collective effort,” said Dion. “There’s a big push from all of the kids to help put this show on and make it special.”

In addition to seniors, the works of high school students in all grades were showcased. In the school library, a variety of work hung on the walls as trays of food made by culinary students were available.

Dion said altogether the works of approximately 125 students were on display. The performing arts was represented, too. The Drama Club gave visitors a sneak peek at a few numbers from its upcoming performance of “Rent.”

Dion noted that students relish the chance to show off their hard work.

“They are so excited to bring by their family and friends,” said Dion.
