Wareham High School students explore the universe at Museum of Science

May 11, 2015

A group of 28 Wareham High School students were able to explore the universe and much more when they traveled to the Museum of Science in Boston on April 30.

Students from earth science and astronomy classes explored the museum and saw a planetarium show as part of the grant-funded field trip. Students were divided among the two chaperons and were tasked with finding museum items related to topics they were covering in class.

The students spied different types of rocks and minerals in the Natural History collection along with sedimentary and igneous rocks from local areas around Massachusetts. Some students explored the capsule model from the Apollo space missions while others caught the electricity show.

At lunch, the students talked about their findings. Many were enamored with the dinosaurs and fossils located on the bottom floor. A few groups enjoyed the special exhibit on food and some enjoyed the human body exhibit, which included lungs and heart being inflated before their eyes.

Another group of students made music by walking and running down the musical stairs located by the gift shop. Students were able to understand how they work because of what they learned in class about the electromagnetic spectrum.

The planetarium show was titled, “Exploring the Universe” and showed students objects within our solar system as well as other galaxies.
