Wareham to hold mad dash for trash
Grab your friends and your garbage bags and head out on the town because the Don't Trash Wareham town cleanup event is back Saturday, Sept. 21 and Sunday, Sept. 22.
According to Don't Trash Wareham founding member Nora Bicki, organizers are asking Warehamites to go out this weekend and pick up trash, debris and litter in their neighborhoods and streets in an effort to keep Wareham clean.
"I think the community is excited about getting back to doing this," said Bicki. "It's always easier to do it when you're with a group of friends."
Many people end up forming groups to go out together and they pick a specific spot like a playground or beach, said Bicki.
"We have a good community," said Bicki. "We have a lot of people who are willing to volunteer and do community service."
According to Bicki, the event spiked in popularity before the pandemic with around 400 participants. This year Bicki expects to have well over 100 people out and some people have continued the tradition even when the event shut down.
"We have a woman who cleans Little Harbor Beach every day and there's a gentleman who [cleans] Onset Avenue every day," said Bicki. "That was an outcome of our previous Don't Trash Wareham Program where people really got into the habit of cleaning."
Bicki is confident people will get back into the pre-pandemic cleaning spirit.
"Several people have already contacted us as to whether they'll be cleaning and many of them have done it in the past," said Bicki. "Some of those people are going to be out this weekend again and they'll be cleaning the same places they had cleaned in the past."
The event will take place all day and organizers encourage participants to contact them at donttrashwareham@gmail.com to let them know where and when they will be cleaning.
