Wareham looks to help with Sandy relief
While "superstorm" Sandy brushed Wareham, it devastated Staten Island and parts of New Jersey, and the town's Selectmen are hoping to help.
While disaster relief for Hurricane Sandy was already on the Selectmen's agenda on Tuesday, a number of residents stepped up during "citizen’s participation" portion of the meeting to address the issue.
“There’s a lot of local resources we have, even if it’s just someone going down there with lumber and tools,” said Town Moderator Claire Smith.
Selectman Cara Winslow, who noted that she has ties to people in the affected area, emphasized that people should not just head down to New Jersey with a U-Haul full of supplies.
The effort should be organized, Winslow said, and suggested that the town work with churches and animal shelters in the affected areas.
Wareham resident Rudy Santos said the devastation in New York and New Jersey affected his loved ones as well, and it’s not a problem with a quick or easy solution.
“This is a long-term situation. I lived in Staten Island for a few years, and my family still lives there,” said Santos.
Santos suggested that the town and its residents collect and store supplies to send to the afflicted areas in the months ahead.
Winslow suggested having an upcoming meeting to come up with a plan of action. A date has not been set.
