Wareham man arrested after allegedly fleeing scene of drunken crash
A Wareham man faces eight charges after allegedly fleeing the scene of the accident in Rochester Monday night, according to Rochester police.
Police said 40-year-old Michael R. Jefferson of Queen Drive in Wareham had been operating a Ford pickup truck near the intersection of Route 28 and Route 58 around 9 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, severing one telephone pole and hitting a mailbox and another telephone pole in the process. Police said they found Jefferson hiding in the woods shortly following the accident.
According to police, officers arrived at the scene to find the badly damaged truck in the roadway, and a witness had seen Jefferson flee into the woods.
Jefferson was reportedly arrested and transported to Tobey Hospital for medical treatment, and was ordered held without bail while under police guard at the hospital Tuesday morning.
Police said Jefferson faces charges of speeding, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, operating a vehicle with a revoked registration, operating an uninsured vehicle, operating after license suspension, possessing an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, and operating under the influence of liquor (second offense).
Jefferson's license was reportedly under suspension as the result of a drunk driving case in Brockton in March.
Police reportedly located numerous beer cans in the vehicle Monday, with some open and some still full.
According to police, the accident scene was more than 400 feet long, starting when the vehicle veered off the roadway and severed the telephone pole. The vehicle was totaled in the crash. The section of road where the crash occurred was closed for several hours.
