Wareham man charged with third OUI after hit and run
A Wareham man has been charged with his third driving under the influence offense after reportedly side-swiping a vehicle and leaving the scene of the accident.
According to Wareham police, a pickup truck operated by Joal Cardoza, 34, hit another vehicle Wednesday night at approximately 11:50 p.m. on Sandwich Road and then fled the scene. He was later found in the vehicle by Wareham police on Main St. and was highly intoxicated to the point he reportedly needed assistance standing up. Cardoza’s vehicle showed damage consistent to the accident and had two flat tires.
Police said operator of the vehicle struck by the pickup, a 23-year-old woman from Randolph, was treated for minor injuries and transported to Tobey Hospital.
Another man, 57-year-old Kelvin Andrews from Onset was also found to be intoxicated inside the vehicle and was in possession of an open container of vodka, according to police.
Cardoza was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, his third offense, as well as operating to endanger, operating after license revocation, and leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury.
Andrews, who owned the vehicle operated by Cardoza, was placed in protective custody due to his intoxicated state and will be charged with allowing an improper person to operate a motor vehicle and violation of the open container law.
