Wareham man faces kidnapping, carjacking charges
A Wareham man is being held in lieu of $100,000 cash bail after allegedly kidnapping a 75-year-old woman, and carjacking a young couple with an infant in the car on Thursday, October 3.
Thirty-one-year-old Matthew Mullen of Wareham told the alleged victims he had a gun, but police later discovered he did not.
As the 75-year-old Wareham woman loaded her groceries into her car at the Stop & Shop parking lot in East Wareham, she felt someone push something against her back.
"He said it was a gun and not to do anything stupid, and to follow his directions or I would get hurt," the alleged victim stated, according to reports filed in Wareham District Court.
Police say Mullen, asked her for $500: "I said I didn't have any money," she told police.
He then asked for her cell phone, and when she said she'd left it at home he ordered her into her car and told her to drive, according to police.
Reports state that Mullen ordered her to drive to Mayflower Bank, and told her to take $300 from the ATM.
She didn't have a bank card.
The ride continued down Onset Ave., until she spotted a cruiser parked at the intersection of Midway Street and Onset Ave.
According to reports, she slowed down and yelled to the officer that she needed help.
The police report stated that she told police she pulled over because "she knew she had to stop because she didn't know if she would have another chance; she wasn't sure what the suspect would do to her."
The cruiser pulled closer to the car and the alleged victim got out and told the officer what had happened. The officer reported the incident to the station, but it wasn't over yet.
As she was speaking to the officer, Mullen hopped into the driver's seat, and tore down Onset Ave., according to police.
The officer took off after him with blue lights flashing, but Mullen didn't stop.
According to police, Mullen maneuvered around a flatbed truck that was in the process of towing a car, and sped up Tenth Street at what police estimate was "70 plus" mph, then blew through stop signs on East Central Ave. and Highland Ave., before cutting through the Onset Beach Mobile Home Park.
The whereabouts of the vehicle were briefly unknown, until another officer said he'd seen the vehicle abandoned on Whittemore Ave.
Mullen had abandoned the car in an attempt to flee in another vehicle. He reportedly told the occupants of that car, a young couple and their two-month-old baby, that he had a gun and ordered them to drive.
According to police reports, the female victim in the second car stated: "The guy ripped open my back door saying he had a gun and to drive...I tried to drive so he couldn't get in but he jumped in and slammed the door..."
An officer informed others that he had seen Mullen enter the second car. The officer acted quickly, pulling his car in front of the vehicle Mullen had just entered, while another officer pulled up alongside the back door on the passenger's side to block Mullen's path, and Mullen was placed under arrest.
When police asked Mullen why he'd claimed to have a gun, and attempted to take money from the alleged victim Mullen said "desperation." He then added "homeless and hunger, haven't eaten in two days."
In relation to the incident with the 75-year-old woman, Mullen is charged with: Kidnapping, assault to rob a person over age 60 while armed, larceny of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, speeding, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
As for the alleged incident with the people in the second car, Mullen is charged with three counts of kidnapping and carjacking.
