Wareham Middle School students and staff face off in basketball fundraiser
Wareham Middle School students put up quite the fight Tuesday night at the staff-student basketball game in the middle school’s gym.
The children literally kept the staff on their toes, as they ran back and forth across the court floor, spurred on by the cheers of their parents and fellow students. But the school did not just put on the game for fun. The game raised money for new learning technology for the students.
“If they do PARCC [Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers] in the next couple years, instead of MCAS [Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System], that’s included in the program,” English language arts teacher and student council co-advisor Wendy Brogioli said, referring to two kinds of academic performance tests taken at the grade level. The former assess students based on their readiness for college and the workforce, while the latter focuses on academics.
Brogioli said she believes the school needs about $7,000 for the new technology it has in mind, but that the night’s turnout was not as big as it was last year.
“I think we raised a few hundred dollars,” Brogioli said. “Probably about [$400] or $500, which is not bad, small crowd like this. I’m guessing last year we raised about twice that.”
Brogioli said she believes fewer people attended, due to the unusual timing of the event, which had to be moved, due to snow days, vacations, and the upcoming MCAS testing.
The students won the game 68 - 67, but seventh-grader Bryce Fernandes, 13, said the match was rigged from the get-go.
“The refs were crooked. They were paid out,” Fernandes joked, referring to the close score.
But he said he had a good time.
“It was really fun, going out here, having fun with my friends, just doing a lot of stuff with them, and catching up on what they’re doing,” Fernandes said.
