An alleged altercation between New Bedford Voc Tech and Wareham high school students on Friday is being investigated, New Bedford Superintendent Michael Watson confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

“The incident is being investigated by the New Bedford Police and we are conducting our own internal investigation,” Watson said in an email. “Any GNBVT students involved in a disturbance on school grounds at a school sponsored event will be appropriately and swiftly addressed upon completion of the investigation.”

Wareham High School Principal Scott Paladino said that after the basketball game Friday night, three students and a parent left the game and were confronted by three non-Wareham students in the parking lot. A verbal argument ensued, which turned physical, Palladino said, and at one point a student -- not from Wareham -- brandished a fake gun. Police were soon called. Palladino said the varsity team was in the locker room at the time.

The incident reportedly happened Friday night after the schools faced off in a basketball game, WBSM reported. The Twitter account “Southern Mass Alerts” tweeted more details of the alleged fight the next day.

“Kids [...] shooting kids with Orbeez guns driving by in parking lot,” the account posted. “Several cruisers responding. Also reports of fights.”

An Orbeez gun is a toy firearm that uses small, squishy pellets as projectiles. Orbeez are plastic balls that enlarge when soaked in water.

The news organization Insider reported last week of a national social media trend using Orbeez guns, which has attracted police attention in some towns. Almost 25 million videos have been tagged with the hashtag #Orbeezgun on TikTok as of Wednesday afternoon.

The New Bedford Police Department did not respond to two calls made Wednesday asking for comment.
