Wareham Police serve the public on Saturday, literally
It's not every day you'll see Wareham Police Chief Kevin Walsh wiping down tables at a restaurant. However, Walsh and other officers truly put the "serve" in "serve and protect" as they participated in Tip-a-Cop, a national fundraiser for the Special Olympics.
Walsh and other officers assisted staff at Red Robin in Wareham Crossing on Saturday for the fundraiser, which is an initiative of the Law Enforcement Torch Run program.
The program raises money for the Special Olympics by helping offset costs for athletes. The Special Olympics has 24 sports throughout all four seasons and athletes often train all year long.
That's the case for Wareham athlete Liam Tierney, who plays basketball, softball, volleyball and flag football. He and his family had lunch at Red Robin during the fundraiser.
Red Robin was one of four locations throughout the state to hold the event. It's the first time the event was held in Wareham.
It encouraged patrons to tip police officers in addition to tipping their servers, with all the proceeds going toward the Special Olympics.
From 11 a.m to 3 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m., officers put on their aprons, accepted donations, and served as "celebrity waiters."
The department raised $2,250.
