Wareham rallies for its libraries
Wareham showed a whole lot of love for its libraries on Saturday.
The third annual Love Your Library Rally was held at the Wareham Free Library.
"It's to support state funding for libraries in Massachusetts," Wareham Free Library Librarian Denise Medeiros said of the rally, adding: "We always get a good [number] of people who come in."
In addition to the Wareham Free Library, the town operates the Spinney Memorial Library in Onset.
Ralliers had the opportunity to sign petitions in support of library funding. The petitions will be sent to State Rep. Susan Williams Gifford (R-Wareham) and State Senator Marc Pacheco (D-Taunton). Didn't get a chance to stop by the rally? The petitions will be available to sign until Feb. 14.
Attendees also filled out slips to say "Why I love the Wareham Free Library," and all who completed those and the petitions will be entered into a drawing for gift baskets.
Local officials stopped by to read to children as part of the rally. The event also served as a showcase of local talent. Members of the Showstoppers performing arts group sang and danced, and other local acts stopped by.
"We couldn't do it without these wonderful volunteers," Medeiros said of the event, noting that she was pleased with the turnout.
February is a busy month at the library. Volunteers are preparing for the Fore! For the Friends mini-golf fundraiser, organized by the Friends of the Wareham Free Library and A.D. Makepeace. It is scheduled for Feb. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The annual event turns the library into a tricky, mini-golf course, with decorated, sponsored holes. The cost to play is $5 for adults and $3 for children under age 12. The proceeds will be used to purchase books.
