Feb 14, 2012

Wareham resident Sonny Tavares, 23, and Onset resident Chad Turner, 22, were arrested on February 8 for possession of marijuana over 1 ounce, according to a Wareham Police statement.

Tavares, in addition to the marijuana charge, was also taken into custody by Massachusetts parole officers for violation of previously set parole conditions, police said.

More than 2 ounces of marijuana were found in a sandwich bag in a car that Tavares was driving and $1,562 cash on the person of Tavares, according to police.

Wareham Police officer Bryan Whalen stopped the vehicle on Onset Avenue after observing defective equipment, according to police.

The vehicle was driven by Tavares with passengers Turner and a third male who did not face charges as a result of the stop.

Patrol officers located the marijuana and the cash during an investigation of the vehicle. Both parties were placed under arrest and the vehicle was towed from the scene, according to the statement.

Tavares and Turner were arraigned in Wareham District Court on February 9.
