The Wareham School Committee offered a heartfelt farewell to one of their own Wednesday night, current Chair Mel Lazarus.

In January, Lazarus announced he would not seek a second, three-year term on the committee. Wednesday marked the last time he would attend a meeting before the April 4 town election. Lazarus said he is not seeking re-election to spend more time with his family.

Committee members Judy Caporiccio, Geoff Swett and Dr. Cliff Sylvia all spoke to Lazarus’ integrity, hard work and dedication to Wareham schools.

“You’ve had quite a career here,” began Caporiccio. “You were a mover and a shaker…You obviously have Wareham in your heart. It is so evident that you love the schools.”

Lazarus spent more than 20 years working in the schools as an educator, something Sylvia touched on.

“Here’s the thing about Mel Lazarus – I think it’s the best testimony I can give you – I’ve talked to the alumni of Wareham High School and I have never heard a negative word about Mr. Lazarus,” said Sylvia.

Swett noted that Lazarus will be missed.

“I believe there will be a qualitative difference on this committee between now and when you’re gone,” said Swett.

Lazarus, who was moved by the words of his fellow committee members, thanked them, administrators, the community at large and especially teachers.

“I leave the Wareham education community with a heavy heart,” said Lazarus. “But I feel good about what I’ve done…Most of all, I want to thank the teachers in this district. I can not say enough about what they do for Wareham.”
