Wareham School Committee mulls axing 'senior privileges'
“Senior privileges” may become a thing of the past at Wareham High School as School Committee members plan to take a closer look at the practice. The privileges allow 12th grade students who earn the right to leave school grounds during lunch and study periods.
On Wednesday, committee members reviewed a long list of policy updates when a routine vote on the practice sparked a wider discussion.
“For fear of being labeled the ‘mean mom,’ I’m not really in favor of senior privileges,” said committee member Joyce Bacchiocchi. “Students are in school for such a short while, I think they should use that time.”
Committee member Geoff Swett then asked Superintendent Kimberly Shaver-Hood her thoughts on the privileges.
“I really don’t believe in senior privileges,” said Shaver-Hood. “I believe students are there to learn.”
Instead of approving the policy update, committee members tabled the issue. They will reexamine the matter and bring it back for a vote at a later date.
