Wareham schools to receive more buses "shortly"
The School Committee revised its busing policy to include all students, and the School Department is buying three to five used buses to replace the most run-down vehicles in the schools’ fleet.
Michael MacMillan, the district’s business manager, confirmed the bus purchase at the Nov. 20 School Committee meeting.
“We should have the... buses shortly,” MacMillan stated.
MacMillan estimated it take two to three months to receive the buses.
Presently, the district is about to place an invitation to bid to competing bus companies.
MacMillan added that the age of the buses will depend on the “price we get.”
$150,000 was allocated for the purchase of school vehicles at Town Meeting, according to the revolving accounts report of October 2013 presented by MacMillan.
In a related topic, the committee approved a policy change by the Policy Review Committee concerning bus transportation.
After some debate regarding the wording of the policy, the committee voted in favor of making the district’s policy on a bus transportation that states: Any K-12 student residing in Wareham may request bus transportation. All enrolled students in a Wareham District school will be provided transportation to and from his or her home or other locations as appropriate.
"The problem was they weren't following the previous policy," said Michelle Ruiz, administrative assistant.
The previous policy did allow students within certain distances of the schools to be transported by bus. The policy was also chanced since fifth graders were moved to another school.
