Wareham Selectmen accuse Buzzards Way Garage owner of selling more cars than allowed

Selectmen chastised the owner of Buzzards Way Garage on Tuesday saying he had more used cars for sale parked on the lot than allowed.

“You’ve got a plan, you submitted a plan, you should be following the plan,” Selectman Patrick Tropeano told owner Henry Dejesus, Jr. “You’re not following the plan by any stretch of the imagination.”

Dejesus had appeared before the board on a separate matter. He was seeking a name change for the business following a clerical error. Instead of granting the request, Selectmen postponed a vote until Oct. 16. In the meantime, board members wanted assurance Dejesus would reduce the number of cars parked in front of the business, located at 3067 Cranberry Highway.

According to Selectmen, Dejesus was approved for nine cars. However, Tropeano and Chair Alan Slavin said they observed many more cars parked in front.

Dejesus said the extra cars were from a mix of customers and cars that had already been sold.

“I don’t have control over who parks in front,” said Dejesus.

Tropeano said Dejesus was being disingenuous.

“Please don’t sit there and pretend I’m an idiot,” said Tropeano. “I’ve been around a long time.”

Slavin said town officials were cracking down on enforcement in several areas throughout town after being lax for many years.

“We’re trying to enforce the rules, which we haven’t done in some years,” said Slavin. “And that’s gotten us in trouble.”

Tropeano said he wanted Dejesus to do well, but he had to follow the agreement.

“We’re not trying to put you out of business or anything,” said Tropeano. “We just want to make sure you’re following the rules.”
