Wareham signs contract with WCTV

Jun 12, 2013

After sorting out some issues, the Town of Wareham has signed a contract with WCTV.

Currently, Wareham  has approximately $416,000 in an account that's waiting to be released to WCTV once a contract is signed.

WCTV hammered out separate contracts with Comcast and Verizon in 2005 and 2007, respectively. The TV station was incorporated as a nonprofit in 2007.

Under the contract, both cable companies pay 4% of gross revenues from cable services in the Town of Wareham to WCTV, and 0.5% to the town.

"They were holding the portion that's supposed to go to the TV station," said WCTV Executive Director Jay Heard. "There were discrepancies in the number we thought was owed."

As the agreement with the town has languished, so have funds owed to WCTV by the cable providers. Currently, there is approximately $239,000 from Comcast, and $177,000 from Verizon being held in an account for WCTV.

"The key language on that was ... that this was going to bring everything to finality," said town attorney Richard Bowen. "We got to a point where we have two documents that we think are really good documents for you."

WCTV agreed at a Selectmen's meeting in February, as part of the contract, to cover all Board of Selectmen, School Committee, and Town Meetings. Coverage of other municipal meetings will have to be requested ten business days in advance

The new contracts will expire in 2015 for Comcast, and 2017 for Verizon.
