The Wareham Sunoco at 2893 Cranberry Highway has been fined $300 for selling cigarettes to a minor. This was the business's first offense for illegally selling cigarettes to an underage person.

Sunoco employee John Peardon appeared before the Wareham Board of Health on Wednesday night where he admitted to the illegal sale.

"I'm the one that made the mistake," he explained to the board. "I've been there over 20 years. I'm usually a mechanic. That day the person at the register was busy and I thought I'd be helpful...I won't be selling cigarettes anymore," he said with a laugh.

The board was sympathetic to his story, but reminded him that the offense was not something they could ignore as it was a state infraction.
